Brisbane Future Discussion
13:00 – 13:45 Brisbane Future Discussion (~45 min)
- Brisbane Broad Objectives
- Get papers out
- Exchange information to enhance productivity
- Get grants separately and together
- Provide intercomparison data for future use?
- Other objectives?
- Relation of objectives to RCN
- Interest groups will (hopefully) expand and enhance info exchange
- RCN funding for meetings and exchanges will facilitate collaboration
- RCN can add credibility and strengthen proposals
- However, RCN will compete for effort of group, especially since many of the group are IG conveners
- Possible Actions
- Stay the course – continue to meet monthly, keep pushing on papers, etc.
- Stay the course until the end of the year and reassess.
- Continue monthly meetings, but refocus more on papers, less on interest group stuff and news, to keep shorter
- Alternate meetings with RCN, possibly refocus as above
- Phase out or end Skypes and use Brisbane wiki to move papers ahead.
- Phase out or end Skypes and leave authors to finish papers (or not, if research has moved on).
Governance Issues
15:15 – 17:00 Governance Issues
- Membership – Steering Committee; New participants
- Assessment – “Ongoing assessment of progress and the quality and quantity of coordination will be an theme within the project. Needed actions will be taken to improve effectiveness and the direction of coordination toward the goals.”
- Travel and Participant Support – “A solicitation through the TLSIIG web site will open funding opportunities for workshops and builder’s meetings to the community, with the Steering Committee or subcommittee acting to disburse funds in support of the coordination goals. Where possible, the Steering Committee will favor younger researchers, graduate students, and underrepresented groups.”
- Supplementary Support from Participant Organizations (Stuart Phinn)
- Participant Selection. “Workshops and meetings will be open to all TLSIIG members, who will be informed of activities through the email list and web site. Appropriate Steering Committee members will be canvased before upcoming activities for outside participants to encourage to join the TLSIIG and RCN and participate. For student exchanges, students will be solicited to prepare short proposals for their exchanges and the steering committee will review and award them.”
- Diversity Action. Summer internship available for underrepresented minority at BU; Crystal to identify? Are there other underrepresented minorities at other places that we can invite into the RCN?
- TLSIIG-RCN Relationship. Quo Vadis?
Other Stuff
- Richard Fournier’s suggestion that we find more sites to compare instruments and results?
- Tie in to Francophone TLS group, Canada and France?
